A St Catherine farmer who is being accused of giving his licensed firearm to another man to fire on a public thoroughfare was remanded when he appeared in the Old Harbour Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.
He is Winston Melvin of High House district in the parish.
When Melvin appeared before Resident Magistrate Vaughn Smith, he was ordered remanded. His lawyer Peter Champagnie applied for bail, which was denied by the court.
Allegations are that earlier this month, Melvin was in the company of another man whom he reportedly gave his licensed firearm. The man is said to have fired the weapon and returned it to Melvin who placed it in his waistband.
A senior police officer who was parked nearby, saw what took place and approached Melvin and made his observation known. The man who had earlier fired the weapon fled the scene.
Melvin was taken into custody and following an investigation by Detective Corporal André Smith, he was arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and aiding and abetting the discharge of a firearm within 40 feet of a public thoroughfare.
