A Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) conductress/driver was yesterday robbed of an undetermined sum of money by a man believed to be of unsound mind, while she attended to passengers at a bus stop, THE STAR understands.

Information reaching our news team is that about 2:45 p.m., during the afternoon traffic usually experienced while heading into Cross Roads, a man described as mentally ill, stole cash through the window of the bus and made good in his escape.

The incident occurred along Half-Way Tree Road.

A witness told THE STAR: "The man stand up over there so (adjacent the bus stop) and when the bus pull over and stop at the bus stop, him weave through the traffic and run up to the window and grab the money from out her hands."

"When the van reached the stop light, him jump off and people start notice wah gwaan. Two man run him dung and him run go up Emancipation Park way," said a female bystander.

Another witness said: "The madman smart, 'cause while him a run him a dash weh the small change fi distract the conductress weh a run him down; and him gone wid the big money dem. She could have caught him but her pants too tight."

The passengers on the bus, which plies the Half-Way Tree to downtown route, sat and watched as the drama unfolded. As news of the incident spread, curious workers from nearby businesses gathered outside.

THE STAR gathered that a report of the robbery was made to the Cross Roads police, but when contacted, a man, who gave his name as Constable Johnson, said, "I think if you want to put this in your paper you should contact the JUTC about it ... . "

Clinton Clarke, JUTC's marketing and communications manager, said he was hearing about the incident for the first time and would have to be briefed by investigators. Up to late last night, calls to his phone went unanswered.
