Businesswoman on ganja charges has bail extended

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St Catherine businesswoman, who was arrested after seven and a half pounds of compressed ganja were allegedly found in two suitcases she was carrying, had her bail extended following her latest appearance in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Winsome Broadber, from Spanish Town, is charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export ganja. Her case was set for mention on April 22.

The allegations are that on November 23, 2014, at approximately 9 a.m., Broadber was checking in on a Caribbean Airlines flight to Kingston, at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, when her luggage was searched.

Two of her suitcases were found with false compartments, in which three packages were subsequently found. When opened, the packages were revealed to contain vegetable matter resembling ganja, and Broadber was arrested.

On Thursday, the court was told that while the forensic certificate was on hand, a chain-of-custody statement was still outstanding and the officer who was to supply that statement was off the island.

Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie subsequently set the case to be mentioned on April 22, and extended Broadber's bail to that date.
