Suzan Smith, who pleaded guilty to killing her sister Stacey-Ann, was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in the St Catherine Circuit Court yesterday.
When Smith reappeared before Justice Vivienne Harris, her lawyer, Roy Stewart, pleaded for leniency.
Her father also begged the judge to be merciful to the accused who has young children.
Justice Harris then told the accused that she was planning to sentence her to 14 years in prison.
She was told that having spent two years in custody, her guilty plea has being considered and she will serve 10 years.
The Crown led evidence that on April 6, 2012 Suzan used a blunt object to kill her sister. She reportedly buried the body in a part of the house which was under construction. The body started to decompose and flies took over the area.
Suzan reportedly told family members that it was as a result of dead rats that caused the flies infestation. When family members inquired of Stacey-Ann, who had just returned home from abroad a few days earlier, she told them she was in another part of the island.
A missing person's report was made at the Waterford Police Station. An investigation was launched which resulted in the police retrieving the decomposed body. Smith was subsequently arrested and charged with murder by Detective Sergeant Llewellyn Madden.
