The St Andrew North police have taken into custody a man believed to be of unsound mind after he refused to take no for an answer, and knocked a rastafarian man unconscious in a plaza along Constant Spring Road.
Information reaching THE STAR is that on Monday about 9:15 p.m., the accused man, who is a known beggar in the area, went inside the grocery store and was turned away.
THE STAR gathered that the beggar was seemingly shocked to be denied as he was accustomed to getting through with his request for small items.
This resulted in a tussle between himself and the dreadlocked proprietor.
Our news team understands that during the tussle, a board was used to hit the operator across his head resulting in him being knocked to the ground unconscious for a few minutes.
The mentally ill man ran from the scene after the incident, and a man who saw what transpired gave chase, however, he was no match for the accused man's speed.
A police team on patrol in the area later caught up with the runaway suspect and brought him back to the scene where he was identified. Scores of angry persons who had converged at the scene wanted the man released so they could apply their own justice.
When THE STAR visited the plaza yesterday, several store operators told our news team that the shop has not been opened since the incident, and that they last heard that the rastafarian man had to seek medical attention.
The St Andrew North police said that the suspect, who is in custody, is yet to be charged formally.
