Man in custody, four jet skis seized after fatal accident

The police in Westmoreland have taken a man into custody and seized four jet skis, following Tuesday's accident which claimed the life of an American tourist who was visiting the resort town of Negril.

It is reported that Thomas Torres, 53, from Las Vegas, was swimming when he was hit in the head by a jet ski. The operator of the jet ski did not stop.

Torres was rushed to the hospital in Savanna-la-Mar where he was pronounced dead.

Following investigations, the police later detained the jet ski operator.

Last October, tourism minister Dr Wykeham McNeil announced a six-month suspension of the importation of jet skis, following reports of accidents.

The police later seized several illegally operated jet skis in the northern parish of St Ann and other resort areas after the announcement.
