Computer tech freed of sexual offence rap

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

A 32-year-old computer technician was freed in the St Catherine Circuit last Thursday on a charge of having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16.

Defence attorney Sean Kinghorn said his client was convinced by the complainant that she was over 18 years old at the time of the incident.

The jury retired for about an hour and returned an unanimous verdict of not guilty.

The trial arose from a February 2012 incident in a rural St Catherine district.

Acting on information, police were said to have caught the accused having sex with the then 15-year-old complainant. He was subsequently arrested and charged and made numerous court appearances.

This is the third time since the start of Michaelmas session that persons on sex related charges have been freed.

The acquittal of the accused in the St Catherine Circuit Court has resulted in a number of persons expressing concern on the constant acquittal of persons charged with sexual offence.

Presided judge was Justice Crescentia Brown.
