WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man who reportedly beat his babymother with a hammer and stabbed her with a knife has been remanded into custody until tomorrow, when he will be brought back before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

Paul Atkinson, of a Montego Bay address, is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and unlawful wounding, committed against Peta-Gaye Chambers. He was remanded in custody when he came before the court on Monday.

The allegations are that, on December 16, at approximately 2 p.m., Chambers was walking along Bevin Avenue, in Montego Bay, when Atkinson approached her. The two then got into an argument concerning the couple's child.

It is further alleged that, at this point, Atkinson used a hammer to hit Chambers, knocking her to the ground, and then used a knife to stab her in the back.

On Monday, the court was told that the medical certificate was still outstanding.

"You are going to stay in custody today," Resident Magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines told Atkinson sternly. "A lawyer will be assigned to you, though," the magistrate continued, as she set the case for mention tomorrow.
