Wheelerfield, St Thomas:

A freak accident at the Wheelerfield Marl Pit in St Thomas on Saturday, involving two senior citizens, led to one being crushed to death by a front-end loader.

The dead senior citizen has been identified as Clifton Francis, about 78 years old, of Wheelerfield in the parish.

Reports reaching THE STAR are that about 11:30 a.m. last Saturday, Francis, employed as a watchman at the marl pit, was assisting the owner of the pit, 83-year-old Winston Anderson, to take logs up steep slope at the pit. The watchman was reportedly hanging on to the side of the front-end loader allegedly being driven by Anderson who lost control of the vehicle which overturned.

Anderson managed to escape serious injuries as he was protected by the cabin of the front-end loader while Francis was crushed.

The body was removed for a post-mortem examination. The Golden Grove police are investigating.
