Two Montego Bay-based police officers who are facing a murder charge in relation to the shooting death of a man in 2013 had their case set for mention on January 8, 2015, when they appeared in court on Wednesday.

Constables Surano Bird and Meseck Palmer are charged with murder before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, following the fatal shooting of Dujean Robinson of Catherine Mount in the parish.

The allegations are that on November 7, 2013, Robinson was shot to death at his home during a police operation in the area.

However, a witness later claimed that Robinson was arrested and then shot by the police, and also that Robinson was unarmed. Subsequent investigations led to the arrests of Bird and Palmer by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).

When the case was mentioned on Wednesday, clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm told presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie that the file was not ready, as the investigating officer had a number of documents that should be served to the defendants' lawyers through the clerk of court.

The court was also told that a meeting is to be held with the investigating officer, in order to determine a date for preliminary examination.

The case was subsequently set for mention on January 8, and Bird and Palmer had their bails extended until that date.
