WESTERN BUREAU:
A Belgian national who reportedly attempted to smuggle over nine pounds of cocaine out of Jamaica, recently, will have his case mentioned in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on January 2, 2015, to allow him time to give his lawyer instructions.
Patrick Martens, who is charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export nine and a quarter pounds of cocaine, was remanded when he appeared in court last Wednesday.

Although the court was not told when Martens was arrested, the allegations are that he was preparing to board a flight to Brussels, Belgium, from the Sangster International Airport, in Montego Bay. During a routine search, the cocaine was reportedly found in his luggage, and he was subsequently arrested.
When the case was called up last Wednesday, presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie was told that Martens had recently retained attorney-at-law Henry McCurdy as his legal counsel, and, as such, the attorney had not yet taken instructions from the defendant.
"Your fingerprints will be taken today, and your lawyer wants to speak to you. You will be brought back here on January 2," RM Tie told Martens, before remanding him.
