A jury on Wednesday returned a not-guilty verdict against a 21-year-old woman from Airy Castle in St Thomas, who had been languishing in jail since her arrest for murder in 2012.
Tamika Scott was charged with the murder of 19-year-old labourer Rhian Champagnie of the same address.
Allegations are that Scott and Champagnie got into an altercation on October 26, 2012, and Scott used a knife to stab Champagnie in the neck, killing him. Scott was arrested on November 3, 2012 and charged with murder.
She was unable to make bail offered to her because of errors on her birth certificate. Bail was offered at $400,000.00, later reduced to $250,000.00, with conditions that Scott resides in St Catherine and report to the Point Hill Police Station on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She was also to surrender her travel documents and a stop order placed on her.
Scott was acquitted after the court heard testimony that she acted in self defence.
