A fisherman accused of stealing a chain was imprisoned when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Charged with larceny from the person is Lamar Davis, who pleaded 'guilty with explanation' to the offence.
The court heard that Davis was believed to have been desperate to make amends with his brother following the disappearance of an illegal firearm that was alleged to have been in his brother's possession. It remains unclear whether or not the alleged illegal weapon belonged to the accused man's brother, or if his brother presumably had the gun on loan.
"Morning ma'am," Davis began, "I was having a little dispute with my brother who say mi did tief him gun and if mi nuh pay for it."
"So that's why yu tief the chain to pay back for di gun weh yu bredda tief?" a seemingly flabbergasted Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey interjected. "Your brother rent one gun, lost it or tief it, and yu want money for the gun to save everybody, so yu go and thief the lady chain to pay for it? This is a place of law, mi supposed to pretend that it nuh illegal?"
RM Pusey appeared visibly outraged as she admonished the accused man.
"Don't like this buss off of chain thing, people must can wear dem pretty pretty!" RM Pusey continued.
Subsequently, the accused man was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. A fingerprint order was also made against him.
