A St Catherine woman who was charged with cruelty to a child after beating her nine-year-old son mercilessly was given two years' probation in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court last Wednesday.

She is Sabrina James, a labourer, from Portmore.

Resident Magistrate Ann-marie Nembhard gave the accused a stern warning before handing down sentence.

"I find it very sad that a mother could be so cold to the child she gave birth to. Our children are suffering tremendously from persons who mistreat them. As for you, there will be a programme of counselling throughout your probation," RM Nembhard said.

She told the accused that she must abide by all conditions of the sentence, and if it is violated she can be dragged back before the court.

The mother of two reportedly beat her child severely earlier this year which resulted in cuts and bruises.

The police were called in and she was arrested and charged. James was not represented when she appeared in court.
