WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man who reportedly attempted to burn down his sister's shop last August returns to the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on December 18.

Guy McGhie, from Maroon Town, is charged with malicious destruction of property.

Allegations are that on August 28, approximately 8:30 a.m., Marcia McGhie went to the defendant's house after receiving a telephone call about him. She saw him standing in the yard with a machete.

After confronting him, the complainant went inside her shop. The accused proceeded to chop the shop's door and window, damaging both. He left but returned, then poured a substance on the shop and unsuccessfully tried to light it. The police were summoned and he was arrested.

The court was told that the complainant wished to discontinue the case.

"Do you want to put an end to the matter?" presiding magistrate Ann-Marie Granger asked the complainant.

"As long as he stays away from me," she replied.

"But I cannot sit up here and guarantee that he is going to leave you alone," said RM Granger.

The case was subsequently put off after the defendant pleaded guilty.
