Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man who reportedly beat his babymother with a hammer and stabbed her with a knife has been remanded into custody until tomorrow, when he will be brought back before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

Paul Atkinson, of a Montego Bay address, is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and unlawful wounding, committed against Peta-Gaye Chambers. He was remanded in custody when he came before the court on Monday.

The allegations are that, on December 16, at approximately 2 p.m., Chambers was walking along Bevin Avenue, in Montego Bay, when Atkinson approached her. The two then got into an argument concerning the couple's child.

It is further alleged that, at this point, Atkinson used a hammer to hit Chambers, knocking her to the ground, and then used a knife to stab her in the back.

On Monday, the court was told that the medical certificate was still outstanding.

"You are going to stay in custody today," Resident Magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines told Atkinson sternly. "A lawyer will be assigned to you, though," the magistrate continued, as she set the case for mention tomorrow.

A St James man who reportedly assaulted his brother and destroyed his mother's closet door has been remanded in police custody until January 16, when his case will be tried.

Rainford Reid, who is charged with assault at common-law and malicious destruction of property, was given the trial date when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The allegations are that on October 8, Reid damaged a closet door belonging to his mother, resulting in damage estimated at $12,000. He is also alleged to have attacked his brother on October 28, although the details of that incident were not outlined.

"Your family can take care of the chickens," RM Hart-Hines answered.

"Me innocent, ma'am. Mi chicken dem a go perish," Reid protested.

"You are remanded in custody ... January 16 for trial," the magistrate countered, before ordering that Reid be taken into custody.

Grammy Award-winning dancehall artiste Sean Paul has taken the decision to cancel his New Year's Eve performance in The Maldives, following death threats the artiste recently received.

In a post to the artiste's wall on Facebook, Sean Paul acknowledged the threat, but thanked the government and the people of Maldives for having invited him to perform.

"As a Jamaican reggae musician, I have always promoted love and unity of all cultures, races and religions. Unfortunately, the world has reached a point where cyber threats must affect real life decisions. With that said, due to safety concerns for my crew and the people of The Maldives attending the Tourist Arrival Countdown, it is with deep regret that I have come to the difficult decision to cancel my appearance," the post read.

"I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the government and the people of The Maldives for their invitation and wish for them peace," it continued.

Recently, Sean Paul was to meet with his Headline Entertainment team over the threats he had received from an extremist Islamic group.

The group had threatened to kill the artiste if he performed in the Islamic nation.

Three killed in two-vehicle collision

Detectives attached to the Westmoreland Police Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision which claimed the lives of three persons on Farm Road, Westmoreland, yesterday.

Dead are 48-year-old Pisley Ennis, higgler of May Pen, Clarendon; 47-year-old Paulette Watt of Georges Plain and Neville Campbell, higgler of Gallery district both of Westmoreland.

Reports from the Whitehouse police are that about 7:15 a.m., all three were passengers in a Toyota Hiace minibus travelling from Savanna-la-Mar to Kingston. On reaching a section of the roadway, the driver of the minibus allegedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with a truck travelling in the same direction.

All passengers aboard the minibus received multiple injuries and were taken to hospital where Ennis, Watt and Campbell died while being treated. The other 17 passengers, including the driver of the minibus, are said to be in serious but stable condition at hospital.

Man gets three months for receiving a stolen tablet

A man who pleaded guilty to receiving a stolen mobile device was sentenced to three months in prison when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Charged with receiving stolen property is 23-year-old Nicholas Walker of a Kingston address.

According to reports, on December 27, around 9 p.m., the accused was riding a bicycle carelessly without any warning device and was stopped by the police.

When stopped, he was seen with a black scandal bag and it was searched. A white Samsung tablet was found and when it was turned on a name other than the accused's was displayed on the screen.

The accused reportedly told the lawmen that he was not the owner of the device, and that it was given to him by a friend.

After the allegations were read, Walker told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that he did not know the tablet was stolen and was paid to transport the device by a friend.

"Is a youth from Red Hills Road give me it fi carry go unlock. Him seh him woulda give me a ting if me carry it fi him, but when the police go look for him, him run," he said.

Psychiatric evaluation for accused thief

A man who is accused of assaulting another for his car keys and proceeded to drive away the car was remanded into custody and sent for psychiatric evaluation when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Pleading not guilty to simple robbery is Craig Bloomfield of a Kingston address.

According to reports, on December 7, around 7:40 p.m., the complainant was standing, talking to a friend along Red Hills Road, when they were approached by the accused, who demanded the keys to the complainant's car that was parked a short distance away.

The complainant refused and the accused reportedly held on to him and a struggle developed between the two.

subsequently arrested

The accused then robbed the complainant of his car keys, then proceeded to drive away with the motor vehicle and crashed a short distance away. The police, who were close by, accosted the accused and he was subsequently arrested and charged.

When Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked Bloomfield why he took the complainant's car, he stated, "I was fearful, Your Honour, but I am not guilty."

RM Pusey told the accused, "fear or coercion is not a defence for car stealing," to which he responded, "I don't know what I should say without a lawyer present."

Bloomfield also stated that his mother who is overseas was to send an attorney to represent him, but the family friend with whom he resides revealed that he has not been the same mentally since his return to Jamaica about two years ago.

He was sent for psychiatric evaluation and is to return to court for mention on January 16.

Thief swallows chain after robbery

Gets two years in prison

A repeat offender was sentenced to two years' imprisonment yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court for stealing a chain and swallowing it.

Charged with robbery is 20-year-old Omar Yorke. He pleaded guilty to the offence.

The exhibit was available in court, however, it was not disclosed how it was retrieved.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked Yorke, "How many times have you been charged before, and for what, the same thing?"

He said, "Two times, one of dem is for something mi neven know bout, yes, stealing, but mi never know nothing bout that one."

RM Pusey then asked Yorke, "Have you ever been to prison?"

However, before he could answer, she handed down a two-year sentence for the crime.

A fingerprint order was also made against Yorke.

Sabotage at Sting?

Cops probe if producer carried out threat to disrupt event

The police are now investigating an entertainment personality who posted what appears to have been a threat to the promoters of Sting 2014 before the event.

A picture that was posted on social media a few days before the show has pointed to what appears to have been a planned attempt at sabotaging the event.

The picture being looked at by the police show a gun and plans to attend the event to cause problems.

Police sources claim that they are now probing the possibilities that the individual was also responsible for shots fired at the venue during an incident.

After several hours of performances at the event things took a turn after an incident backstage when shots were fired.

It was previously reported that the incident was associated with the entourages of two entertainers.

However, the police now claim that they have evidence that the melee which led to plastic bottles being hurled towards the stage was instigated by the individual after he fired shots.

When THE STAR spoke to the organisers of the event last night, a representative said that they were not willing to comment as the investigations were ongoing.

"We are aware of the investigation, but we are not able to make a comment until it is complete," the representative stated.

Belgian to face court January for cocaine

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A Belgian national who reportedly attempted to smuggle over nine pounds of cocaine out of Jamaica, recently, will have his case mentioned in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on January 2, 2015, to allow him time to give his lawyer instructions.

Patrick Martens, who is charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export nine and a quarter pounds of cocaine, was remanded when he appeared in court last Wednesday.

routine search

Although the court was not told when Martens was arrested, the allegations are that he was preparing to board a flight to Brussels, Belgium, from the Sangster International Airport, in Montego Bay. During a routine search, the cocaine was reportedly found in his luggage, and he was subsequently arrested.

When the case was called up last Wednesday, presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie was told that Martens had recently retained attorney-at-law Henry McCurdy as his legal counsel, and, as such, the attorney had not yet taken instructions from the defendant.

"Your fingerprints will be taken today, and your lawyer wants to speak to you. You will be brought back here on January 2," RM Tie told Martens, before remanding him.

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man, who allegedly robbed a woman of her gold chain and also damaged the chain during the incident, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court last Tuesday.

Twenty-year-old Jevon Jones, from Montego Bay, was before the court on charges of robbery with aggravation, malicious destruction of property and assault at common law.

The court was told that on July 29, 2014, at approximately 3:25 p.m., the complainant was walking along Harbour Street, in Montego Bay, when she felt someone pulling on her gold chain. She immediately turned around and saw James with a knife, and cried for help.

James then pointed the knife at her and said, "Hey gal, if yuh say that again, mi wi stab yuh till yuh dead." Despite the threat, the complainant continued to cry out for 'tief', and the accused man ran off with the chain, which was damaged in the process

In handing down sentence last Tuesday, presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie gave the accused man 12 months' imprisonment on the malicious destruction of property charge.

In respect of the robbery and the assault charges, Jones was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each charge.

Student's proposal surfaces on social media

Chad Bryan, Staff Reporter

A picture of a male student seemingly proposing to a female student from a Corporate Area all-girls high school has surfaced on the social media website, Facebook.

It is unclear if the proposal of the male student was done in jest or was a serious undertaking.

In the three-grid photo, the male student, whose school is unknown, is on bended knee with ring in hand, while the female student appears to be reacting to his proposal.

In another photo, the 'couple' appears to be examining the ring, while in another photo which appears to be in a popular restaurant, the ring is the subject of highlight.

Persons commenting on the photos have expressed elation at the proposal.

"Yes bro, y'all famous now," an individual commented. "Awww," said another.

When the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre was contacted, a representative said she was not aware of this specific incident, however, our news team was told that the incident was likely to have happened.

A policeman at the centre also said he was not aware of this specific incident. By law, the legal age of marriage is 16 with parental consent, and 18 without.

"I do not believe this is serious or the law would have to act. If you come here [Transport Centre], you'd be surprise to see what happens."

Woman bitten on breast for cake

Supermarket fight draws crowd

Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter

Tempers flared at a popular Red Hills Road, St Andrew, shopping establishment yesterday, following an alleged dispute that turned physical between two female patrons jostling for fruitcake.

Alleged witnesses told THE WEEKEND STAR that sometime yesterday, a woman accompanied by her husband was reportedly attacked by another woman. The woman was reportedly punched in the face, and bitten on her breast by the other woman during the fracas.

It is believed that the two were in an argument over a fruitcake, which is seemingly a popular item among shoppers during the Christmas holiday season at the establishment.

While no official report was filed, the Constant Spring police told our news team that they are aware of the incident.

"A man called in to say that his wife was bitten by another woman in her breast and it sink way down," a police source said. "After that, they called back and said that the police shouldn't bother to come because they resolved the matter by themselves."

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a video in circulation on the popular social network Instagram shows scenes of shoppers at the establishment scampering, as others scrambled for remaining packages of pastry off shelves. In the footage, two female shoppers are observed jostling in attempts to secure rapidly depleting pastries.

The police have been maintaining a presence at the enterprise, as it has seen a massive influx of patrons presumably as a result of the holiday season.

The police told THE WEEKEND STAR that no charges have so far been laid against any shopper at the establishment during the Christmas rush.

LIME will not be implementing paper billing fee

In response to customer feedback, and more subscribers opting to receive bills, via email, LIME has decided not to implement paper bill fees, as previously advised.

LIME CEO, Garfield Sinclair, said, "I'm pleased to announce that we will continue free paper bills beyond January 1, 2015, for those who prefer this traditional method."

In a statement yesterday, the CEO said, "LIME is a customer-focused company that listens to the feedback of our customers and although more customers are signing up for the online E-bill and payment option, some still prefer their paper bill by post and so we will aim to satisfy the request of both groups."

Growing industry

In the meantime, Sinclair is encouraging customers to join the almost 20,000 subscribers who have already signed up for E-billing since it was announced in November.

"Receiving bills by email is a growing industry trend that the company hopes customers will increasingly adopt with greater broadband penetration in the future," he said. "We'd also like to emphasise the positive environmental contribution each customer could make, should they choose eco-friendly E-billing."

LIME has upgraded its E-billing system at http://ift.tt/16Rnr6y where customers may sign up and go paperless.

Man killed in Waterford was not a witness in Kartel case - cops

Livern Barrett, Star Writer

Police investigators have dismissed a report that Damion Orrett, who was shot and killed in Waterford, St Catherine, on Monday, was a witness in the Vybz Kartel murder trial.

Instead, Assistant Commissioner Devon Watkis told The Weekend Star yesterday that Orrett, more popularly known as 'Ratty', was down to give evidence in the murder case dismissed against the entertainer last July.

"Despite the efforts of the police, he chose not to make himself available causing the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to dismiss the case against Kartel", Watkis sought to explain.

Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, and two other men were charged with the murder of St Catherine businessman Barrington 'Bossy' Burton.

However, prosecutors decided not to proceed with the trial after Justice Bryan Sykes turned down their application to admit two witness statements.

Sykes said at the time he was not convinced that the prosecution had taken enough steps to locate the witnesses.

It's reported that Orrett was in the Waterford community when a gunman got out of a motor car and shot him just before 9 a.m.

Another man was injured in the shooting and taken to hospital.

Jamaican on the run in Trinidad

A Jamaican is among four illegal immigrants who escaped from a dentention centre in Trinidad, while awaiting deportation to their respective countries.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday, about 11 p.m. on Friday, a guard at the Aripo Detention Centre on making his rounds, discovered that a steel door had been forced open.

Further checks by the guard revealed that four illegal immigrants from Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana and Nigeria, had scaled the barbed wire fence and escaped into the nearby forested area.

A joint police/army/immigration search party scanned the area for the men, but were unsuccessful.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Newsday, the escaped men had allegedly told other detainees that they were planning to escape from the detention centre and remain in Trinidad, because it provides better opportunities than their home countries and did not want to be deported.

The Trinidad and Tobago police and immigration officers are investigating how the four men were able to open the steel door.

Large cocaine seizure at airport

Police seized approximately 55 pounds of cocaine and hashish valued at J$33 million at various ports of entry on Monday.

In the first incident, the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) and Customs Enforcement Officers seized a quantity of cocaine at the Kingston Container Terminal in Kingston.

Reports say about 8:30 a.m., a container was searched and 20 packages containing 48 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of J$31 million was found. No one was arrested.

Hours later, police seized more than a pound of cocaine at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston. Errol Morris, 47, otherwise called 'Trash' and 'Ready', of Mount Salem, St James, was arrested.

Reports are that about 1 p.m., Morris arrived at the NMIA on a flight from Curacao, when he was searched and the cocaine found in his suitcase. He is booked to appear before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

In another incident, police arrested a man for attempting to export cocaine and hashish at the Sangster International Airport, St James.

Reports say about 2 p.m., Everald Golding, 51, of Mount Edgecomb, Runaway Bay, St Ann, checked in for a flight to Toronto, Canada. He was searched and 127 cocaine pellets weighing over two pounds were found. The drug has an estimated street value of J$1.6 million. A search of his luggage revealed hashish valued at J$920,000. Golding is booked to appear before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on January 2.

Non-violent inmates get Christmas gift from FFP

Food For The Poor (FFP) has paid the fines of 29 prisoners who committed non-violent offences so they can spend Christmas with their families.

The first 17 inmates were released from the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre on World Human Rights Day, on December 10. The others were released between December 11-18 from Central and Half-Way Tree police lock-ups and the Tower Street and Fort Augusta adult correctional centres.

Prior to the releases, assessments were conducted of inmates at the facilities. The fines were paid for the non-violent offences, including traffic breaches and larceny.

Material gifts

David Mair, executive director, FFP Jamaica, said the group's mandate is not only to serve the poor with food, houses and other material gifts, but to reunite families and promote peace and prosperity, especially during the seasons of Christmas and Easter.

"This is an annual event that Food For The Poor prides itself on doing," said Mair. Each year, we give non-violent offenders, who are sometimes unable to pay simple fines, a second chance to be reunited with their families and loved ones for Christmas," said Mair.

FFP provides the inmates with lunch for the day, cash for transportation to go home and a gift package containing toiletries. The programme is sustained through continued financial support from donors in the United States.

A video of a man who was allegedly caught stealing and was tied to a light post by his captor has gained some sympathy by viewers despite his unscrupulous actions.

In an over two-minute clip, the man, dressed in a purple merino and beach shorts, could be seen with a bloodied nose, sitting on the ground, bound by rope tied to a light post, looking pitifully at his capturer who doubled as videographer.

"Wah an' wah yuh teef?" the videographer asked.

Some viewers of the video pitied the man, with many stating that he should be forgiven for his actions since he appeared remorseful, while others wished he was punished further.

"Remember, we all sin and the Lord died on the cross for our sin, so instead of wanting to beat him, why not forgive him as Jesus did you? I'm sure whoever tied him up is just as bad as him who thief," one viewer said.

Another reacted, "Once a thief always a thief. him a strong young man who can go work, but I hope him learn him lesson and don't do it again."

Vendor allegedly cuts one-hand man

A fruit vendor who cut a one-hand man on his only arm will have to stand trial before his fate can be determined in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Yesterday when the matter was called up for mention, the accused Jason Henry pleaded not guilty after being slapped with wounding charges.

He, however, had an explanation for the court.

Allegations are that on December 7, Henry used a piece of metal to cut the complainant on his arm.

Henry told the court, "I know him only have one hand. I couldn't ask him to dash weh the rubbish, I beg him take up the cane trash. a friend of mine help him ... . after dem done, him go missing and the friend came to me. I couldn't find my bag with money and shoes. I went to clock tower plaza to look for him."

The accused told the court that he later found the complainant with another man and when he attempted to speak to the complainant to find out where the bag was, an argument developed.

Henry said, "I found one of the bags and when mi ask him for the other bag, the one-hand man pop out him three star and him friend have a cutlass."

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, while examining the complainant, asked Henry, "Him can pop out three star? Him can pull a rachet?"

Henry responded with a resounding, "Yes, your honour!"

A trial date was subsequently set for February 4.
