Alleged JDF fraudsters caught

Two men and a woman who were held in relation to an employment scam were hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Charged with obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud are David Smith, Annabelle Montaque and Phillmore Sutherland.

The Crown is alleging that in August, the complainant was contacted by cell phone by an individual who identified himself as a member of the Jamaica Defence Force.

He was told by the individual that he had been accepted to the Force but needed to pay $15,000 for uniform and a medical before training could commence.

As a result of this, the Fraud Squad was alerted and Montaque and Sutherland were held after they were observed allegedly collecting money from the complainant.

Further investigations led to the Half- Way Tree Police lockup where Smith was found with cell phones in his cell. He was also charged.

The matter is to set for mention on February 5, as the Crown awaits a report from the police's Cyber Crimes Unit.
