St Thomas cops step up fight against break-ins

The St Thomas police are intensifying their fight against break-ins in the parish particularly Yallahs, which has seen a massive increase in recent times.

Deputy Superintendent Beresford Williams reported that break-ins in Yallahs has increased by 56 per cent since January and strategies are now being employed to stem the problem.

Among the strategies, the senior cop says there has been increased foot patrols in areas prone to break-ins, more interaction between residents and the police, while four community meetings will be held across Yallahs monthly. The meeting will focus on the concerns of residents and crime prevention strategies.

Targets of criminals

Earlier reports from the police are that churches in St Thomas have been prime targets of criminals, with six churches broken into since the start of the year. The police say the houses of God are being looted for their amplifiers, mixing boards, equalisers, speakers boxes and fans, as they can be sold easily to sound system operators, as well as used in car sound systems. Such crimes were noted to be hard to detect as the equipment are often integrated into other music systems.

However DSP Williams says that although there is a general increase in break-ins in St Thomas the occurrences are trending downwards in Lyssons and Morant Bay. He added that several arrest have been made with the intensified crime fighting strategies.
