OUR recommends decrease in electricity rates

The Office of Utilities Regulations (OUR) has recommended a decrease in electricity rates, instead of the increase sought nine months ago by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).

THE WEEKEND STAR understands that the OUR made the ruling public on Wednesday after a draft of the determination of its application for a tariff review was sent to the JPS.

Our news team gathered that the suggested rate of decrease would see electricity rates being reduced by an average two per cent.

The JPS had sought an average 21 per cent increase in the price of electricity for residential customers.

The OUR also proposed that commercial and industrial companies should receive a 1.5 per cent cut in electricity rates.

The news has reportedly not gone down well with the JPS.

The company's president and CEO Kelly Tomblin has since said that the decision by the OUR to grant a reduction in rates will affect the company's ability to implement changes necessary to improve electricity supply to its customers.

Tomblin, however, maintains that the company remains committed to improving its customer service, while emphasising that the process will be challenging, because of other variables.
