BLINDNESS LEADS TO HANGING?

Residents of a section of Greater Portmore, St Catherine, claim it was the paralysing fear of becoming blind that led an elderly man to take his own life at his home in the community last Wednesday.

The dead man has been identified as 76-year-old Theophilus Coley, a welder of a Greater Portmore address.

According to a source, Coley, whose eyesight had been deteriorating, was worried and communicated to his family members that he did not want to live blind and cause trouble to people.

It is said, that's what led the elderly man to make the decision to end his life.

When contacted, the Greater Portmore police confirmed that around 3:30 p.m., residents found the elderly man hanging from the side of a grille with a merino around his neck and summoned the police.

The police were unable to confirm the residents' theory of the fear of being blind as the man's reason for suicide.

Investigations are continuing into this incident.
