Pan Chicken contest changed my life

Occasion was the presentation of prize money to the winners of the Championships held at the CB Foods headquarters, Waterloo Road. Jobson also won Best Sauce.

She might not be the CB Pan Chicken champion for 2014, but second-place winner Natalie Sill says the contest has changed her life for the better.

The change, she said, is not the financial rewards attached; but, the fact that her participation in the competition has helped her to mature.

"Walking on the streets, people now look up to me. Because of that, I am no longer the aggressive person I used to be. I am much calmer now," she said.

Sill, a jerk chicken seller for the past eight years, operates her business in May Pen, Clarendon. This is the third time she entered the championships, but the first time she has made it this far.

Sill, along with the 2014 Pan Chicken champion, Sitrena Buchanan Gilling and the third place winner, Carlton Jobson, collected their prize money from Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), at the CB Food headquarters on Waterloo Road in St Andrew recently.

other jobs failed

Jobson has been a jerk chicken vendor for the past 10 years. He also operates his business in May Pen.

Hanover resident Buchanan Gilling has been jerking chicken for a long time. She began taking it seriously when other jobs failed to bring the rewards that jerk chicken did. She plans to enroll in a food preparation course.

In addition to the prize money, JNBS through its subsidiary, JN Small Business Loans,. (JNSBL) will provide advice to the winners about managing their small businesses.

In presenting the cheques, Marketing, Operations and Special Projects Manager, Denise Gocul, said: "JNBS is committed to developing micro entrepreneurs. By partnering with CB Foods we knew we would be giving more small business operators the chance to grow their enterprises," she said.

Alicia Bogues, brand manager for CB Foods, said: "This competition is our way of helping entrepreneurship drive small business growth in Jamaica. We look forward to continuing to help micro entrepreneurs become more successful year after year."
