SPELL CAUSES MAN TO STEAL SHOES

Found with more than $400,000 worth of footwear

A man who told the court that it was a spell that caused him to steal more than $400,000 worth of shoes from his employer was sentenced to two years in prison in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday.

Pleading guilty to simple larceny is 46-year-old Orville Reece from Bull Bay, St Andrew.

It is alleged that last December, Reece, who was employed to the complainant as a gardener, went to her house and stole a large quantity of shoes valuing approximately $410,000 from her garage.

On the morning of the incident, the complainant's sister-in-law reportedly saw Reece removing the items from the garage through a window.

After examining her camera footage, the complainant and her spouse trailed the accused to an open lot in Sandy Park, St Andrew, where they saw boxes which belonged to the missing shoes. They waited for the accused to resurface and contacted the Matilda's Corner police. He was subsequently caught by the police in the community.

While at the station, the accused confessed that he had hidden the shoes in a house in the community.

The complainant and her husband visited the location and retrieved a total of two bags and one box filled with shoes.

After the allegations were read, Reece told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, "I give them back."

When the senior magistrate asked the accused why he took the items, he responded, "is evil spell tek me when I go church New Year's, I find out seh is evil spell on me."

RM Pusey asked the accused "how many times did you go to prison and for how long?" to which he admitted, "one time for 18 months," to which she quipped, "I'm gonna step it up to two years."

She also advised him to, "let the chaplain exorcise you when you go in there."
