Consumer Affairs Commission launches text messaging system

Consumers will receive up-to-date information on products

The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has officially launched its free Short Messaging Service (SMS) Notification and Alert service.

The CAC SMS Notification and Alert service is aimed at providing important news to consumers on issues relating to food and product recalls, as well as general consumer alerts on their mobile phones.

Dolsie Allen, chief executive officer, speaking at the launch, noted that the CAC SMS Notification and Alert service is being launched under the Commission's Pass It On campaign. She advised that through the campaign, a larger cross section of consumers will be able to access consumer news on a real time basis.

"When defective products or unsafe foods are found to be in the marketplace, it is of the utmost importance for the Commission to communicate this information to consumers so they can make informed decisions that will not be a detriment to their health," said Allen.

The CEO in referring to the vision of the ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce under which the commission falls, stated that the free SMS service constituted a critical component of both the ministry and by extension, the Commission's strategy to utilise technology to reach consumers.

The CAC SMS is a free and secure service that will not send spam. Consumers desirous of utilising the service may register at the Consumer Affairs Commission's website www.cac.gov.jm where the option is given to select the types of alert preferred. Consumers may also send the SMS message "Sign me up" to 322-5433 to be registered.
