A mother accused of kicking her son in the stomach and later binding his hands and feet after he allegedly entered a house to steal money had her bail extended when she appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with child abuse is a 31-year-old woman of a St Andrew address.

Allegations are that on the day of the incident, the complainant, who is the accused woman's 14-year-old son, reportedly entered a house of a woman in a rural St Andrew, making off with $2,000.

Physical onslaught

After learning about what the child had done, the mother allegedly took up a beer bottle and used it to hit him in the right side of his head, causing pain. It is reported that the child held on to the accused woman's hand in attempts to stop the physical onslaught. It is alleged that the mother then used her foot to kick him in the stomach, causing pain. During the attack, the accused reportedly continued to beat the child all over his body, later using a piece of rope to tie his feet and hands, causing him discomfort.

By the accused woman's admission, the court heard that the child is believed to perpetually steal money in a similar fashion, seemingly offering an explanation as to why she beats him.

In court, the accused woman had her bail extended by Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams until February 5, when she is to reappear. The accused previously had a fingerprint order made against her.
