WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man, who was accused of beating the mother of his child with a hammer and stabbing her with a knife, was offered bail in the sum of $400,000 when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court last week.

Paul Atkinson, of a Springfield address, is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and unlawful wounding, committed against Peta-Gaye Chambers. His case will be mentioned again on January 29.

The allegations are that, on December 16, approximately 2:00 p.m., Chambers was walking along Bevin Avenue, Montego Bay, when Atkinson approached her. The two then got into an argument.

It is further alleged that, at this point, Atkinson used a hammer to hit Chambers, knocking her to the ground, and then used a knife to stab her in the back.

In court last Wednesday, Atkinson's attorney Martyn Thomas told presiding magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines, that the defendant acted in self-defense after being attacked by the complainant and a man who was in her company.

The court was also told that the medical certificate was still outstanding, and the arresting officer's statement was not on file.

"I am prepared to offer him (Atkinson) bail in the sum of $400,000 with three sureties...He is to report to the police on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and he is not to interfere with the Crown witnesses," said RM Hart-Hines, as she set the case for mention on January 29.
