A serving member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, accused of the shooting death of a member of dancehall artiste Mavado's entourage three years ago, was offered bail in the sum of $1 million in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Charged with murder is 34-year-old police constable Neil Gordon of a Kingston 20 address. He was fingerprinted, and will return to court on October 9 for a preliminary enquiry.
The Crown led evidence that in June 2011, the accused, who was providing security at the Quad Nightclub in New Kingston, was involved in an altercation with the now deceased over the correct arm band to enter a section of the club reserved for VIPs.
The prosecutor told Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Georgiana Fraser that Mavado had confirmed that the now deceased was with the artiste, however, a scuffle later developed.
It is alleged that during the altercation, the accused pulled his firearm and shots were later heard. Eyewitnesses claimed they saw the deceased fall to the ground. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.
The prosecutor told the RM that account given by the accused, as well as those provided by his colleagues, was conflicting. The medical evidence is also inconsistent with the statements given by the accused, the prosecutor said.
Defence attorney, Alando Terrelonge, in seeking bail for his client, argued that the entertainer's entourage physically abused the accused resulting in injury.
Bail was subsequently granted.
