59-year-old thief gets six months

A 59-year-old man was sentenced to six months in prison when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, after he was found with sheets of ply in his possession that were stolen from a hardware store.

Charged with receiving stolen property is Morris Burke of a Kingston address.

It is alleged that Burke was found with 34 sheets of ply that were stolen from a hardware store and was later found in his possession.

Burke told the court that he did not know the items were stolen and was simply asked by the watchman to store the items.

"I saw the truck coming with crates to leave it overnight. It was the watchman who gave me them to store and then the police come and arrest him," he explained after pleading not guilty to the offence.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey asked the accused, "How old are you?" to which he responded, "59-year-old, Your Honour." RM Pusey told the accused, "you're gonna spend your 60th birthday in prison enuh. I'm gonna send you to jail for it."

She continued, "you and the watchman plan up to steal the people dem tings."
