A foreign national was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday after she was caught trying to leave the island with cocaine strapped to her underwear.
Charged with possession of cocaine is Lourie Phillmore of a United States address. Phillmore, by way of her lawyer Shantez Stewart, pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Stewart told the court that his client's instructions were that he be presented with disclosure before she entered a plea, however Senior Resident Magistrate Georgianna Fraser chastised him for his tardiness.
She said, "That's not how it works, you are the legal representative for the client, you should outline the process to your client". The court was told that the drug weighed 2.3 pounds (1 kilogram).
The court also heard that on August 8, Phillmore was scheduled to board a Jet Blue flight to Fort Lauderdale.
Irregularities were observed and arose the suspicion of airport officials. She was intercepted and a search was conducted during which several rectangular parcels of cocaine were found strapped to her underwear, in the groin area. Phillmore was remanded in custody and is to return to court on August 18.
