Police seized approximately 28 pounds of compressed ganja at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) on Tuesday.
Reports are that two men arrived at the facility with six buckets of what appeared to be paint. The items were examined, and the buckets were found to contain compressed ganja. Two men were arrested, and the illegal drug and van transporting them were seized by the police.
The operation was conducted by police from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND), supported by the Canine Division and the Jamaica Customs' Contraband Enforcement Team (CET).
The drug, which has a street value of approximately J$98,000, was to be shipped to Antigua.
The seizure brings the total ganja and cocaine seized over the last seven days to 1,779 pounds (806.94 kilogram), valued at J$6,028,000 and 20.4 pounds (9.25 kilograms), valued at J$11M. A total of six persons have been arrested by the TCND for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
Meanwhile, head of the Border and Vital Infrastructure Security (BVIS), Deputy Commissioner James Golding, is commending the lawmen for the intensified efforts that have been made, in partnership with the CET, to clamp down on the illegal drug trade.
"The seizures reinforce the insistence of criminals to use our Ports to transfer illicit drugs and other items. However, the police will be unrelenting in this regard and will continue to intensify operations to clamp down on the illegal trade - and bring traffickers to books for their crimes," Golding said.
