A Venezuelan man swallowed US$103,500 (about J$12M), which he tried to smuggle out of Jamaica.

Eddy Alberio Mancipe Ortega, 40, was sentenced to three months in jail and ordered deported when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Ortega was stopped by officers from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division as he attempted to board a Caribbean Airlines flight from Sangster International Airport to Trinidad last December.

During routine security checks, his behaviour arose the suspicion of the law enforcers, and he reportedly complained of not feeling well. He was subsequently taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was admitted. It was later discovered that he had ingested several pellets containing cash.

During a two-day period, Ortega excreted 80 cylindrical plastic packages, which, when opened, were found to contain approximately US$1200 each. A total of US$103,500 was recovered.

Ortega was charged with four breaches of the Proceeds of Crime Act.
