JPS is reporting an increase in the number of arrests of business operators, due to its partnership with Crime Stop Jamaica. At the beginning of October, the number of arrests stood at eight, however, this figure has since jumped to 20 as reports of theft continue to be investigated.
The initiative forms part of the company's intensified effort to reduce electricity theft in business enterprises in particular.
In recent times, reports of electricity theft through Crime Stop have led to operators of businesses such as bars, grocery shops, hairdressing parlours and ice factories being arrested and charged.
The cases that have been prosecuted so far have resulted in some operators having to pay as much as $800,000 in adjustments. The arrests have been taking place across the island, with the majority taking place in Kingston and St Andrew and Manchester. All contributors to the arrests are guaranteed full anonymity.
The public is being reminded that the JPS/Crime Stop initiative targets electricity theft carried out in businesses, not residences. Persons wishing to report suspected incidents of electricity theft in commercial entities may call Crime Stop at 311.
Concerned persons may also call the JPS Customer Care Centre at 1-888-CALLJPS or 1-888-225-557 (Lime) or 1-888-935-5577 (Digicel).
