Despite recent incidents of violence in St Elizabeth, the most recent of which left a 16-year-old student dead and others injured, Superintendent Lansford Salmon, in charge of the parish, said all major crimes, except rape, were down in the parish.
He was speaking at the monthly meeting of the St Elizabeth Parish Council last Thursday.
"We have seen a decrease in all serious and major crimes. Only in the area of rape have [we] seen an increase. That's why we implore females particularly to be mindful when you're out there," Salmon said.
"Recently, we had a little flare-up in Pisgah, Huntley Castle. I know the citizens might be shaken up by it, but from a policing point of view, we are going to do whatever we can do to put a stop to that type of situation."
He said now more than ever, it was important for persons to be aware of what is taking place in their communities and assist the police.
"One of the problems we find is that citizens must be much more aware; we are not living in the 70s, now we are in 2014, the landscape has changed and we have to be much, much more aware," Salmon warned.
Making reference to a recent shooting in Junction, which left a businessman injured, Salmon said: "It can't be that men with guns go into a public place, [a] town centre, and shoot, and citizens are there and not even to catch a licence plate number. Even though it might be traumatic and frightening, [you] must capture something that will assist police with investigations."
He warned that people should be on the lookout as criminals, such as robbers and conmen are more likely to increase their activities this Christmas.
