Bull Bay residents protest against faulty street lights

Scores of residents of Eleven Miles in Bull Bay, St Thomas staged a peaceful demonstration yesterday afternoon to protest against faulty street lights in and around the community square.

The residents, who gathered at the square bearing placards, says that the 10 street lights, including one damaged during Hurricane Sandy, have been out of service for approximately five months, and that the resulting darkness is fostering criminal activities in the area.

They say the area is unsafe for commuters who use the bus stop, and that several bus and taxi operators have been harassed and robbed in recent months.

Officers from the St Thomas police division confirmed that break-ins have been on the increase in Eleven Miles, with the latest being the robbery of a bar in the square, where several thousand dollars worth of merchandise was stolen, including a deep freeze.

Edwin Marr, councillor for the division, confirmed that the residents had brought the matter to his attention, and that he had made representation to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) to have the street lights repaired or replaced. Councillor Marr gave his assurances that the faulty street lights would be repaired by the end of the day.
