Social enquiry report to decide phone thief's fate

A social enquiry report was requested Friday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to determine the sentencing for a teen who stole a cellphone and a charger.

Charged with simple larceny is 18-year-old Andrew Green.

He pleaded guilty with explanation and told the court that the phone did not belong to the complainant, alleging that it belonged to a friend of his.

The court heard that Green stole the device while the complainant went to urinate and left the phone charging in the St William Grant Park, downtown Kingston.

Allegations are that the complainant saw Green taking up the phone, and when an alarm was raised he ran taking the phone with him. The phone has not been located.

Green said, "Your Honour, a nuh his phone a mi friend phone ... and nuh police never hold me, a me go to the police Thursday."

Green is to return to court on April 30 for sentencing.
