Members of the Mount Olivet United Church near Christiana in Manchester are now mourning the death of one of its members following a bizarre accident on that church's compound on Holy Thursday.
Dead is 73-year-old Constance Swaby of Walderston in the parish.
According to reports, Swaby, her 10-year-old granddaughter, and the driver of a Honda Odyssey motor car turned up for for church service about 5:30 p.m.
Reports are that the female driver was in the process of turning the vehicle around when it went over a precipice - some 70 feet down - near the church cemetery.
A witness shared that the vehicle overturned and rolled a few times, and during the process, Swaby, who has been described as an ardent, regular church member, and who was well loved and respected, was flung from the motor car.
The vehicle, which was seen on top of the elderly woman when it came to a stop, reportedly crushed her, killing her on the spot.
The driver of the motor car and Swaby's granddaughter, who were both in serious but stable condition, had to be rushed to the hospital.
The baptismal service had to be cancelled because the service, which should have had members of four churches in that zone in attendance, understandably turned into mourning instead.
