Mentally ill woman accused of stabbing church members faces court

A mentally ill woman broke down in tears when she was remanded into custody, after appearing in court to answer to allegations that she stabbed two members of a church she attends.

Thirty-four-year-old Simone Allen of a Kingston address was charged with wounding with intent when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

It is alleged that on February 7, the accused was causing a disturbance at the church, which caused members to close the doors. It was revealed that this behaviour occurs on a regular basis.

On the day of the incident, the accused attempted to force her way into the church when the two complainants attempted to bar her from entering the building.

It is alleged that Allen used a knife to stab one of the men in the chest and the other in the leg.

Her attorney asked the court that she be moved from a penal institution to a mental institution due to her mental illness.

A psychiatric evaluation was ordered by Resident Magistrate Lorna Williams, and she is to return to court on March 4.
