Hookers cross the toll - Head to Kingston for better 'business'

Fabian Ledgister, Star Writer

A heavy influx of sex workers have been pouring into the Corporate Area's 'red light' districts from Portmore's Port Henderson Road, popularly known as 'Back Road'.

The police said they have been encountering a high number of females, formerly plying their flesh in Portmore's sex trade hub, in areas such as Eureka Road, Old Hope Road, Cross Roads and Ripon Road.

"I hear there are increased police crackdowns in that (Back Road) area causing many to seek more lucrative grounds to conduct their illegal acts. But we are not going to allow them (prostitutes) the opportunity to create another 'Back Road' here," promised Detective Corporal Gosford Daley from the St Andrew Central Division, where the areas mentioned are located.

Police said if they allow the sex migration to occur unchecked, then a host of other illegal activities will feed from the already illegal trade.

"With more of them (prostitutes) coming to the area, we are seeing increases in drugs being sold, illegal parking and extortion. We are taking a zero-tolerance to all these breaches of the law, and will be pulling out all stops to ensure the area doesn't spiral into chaos," said Daley. "They think if they use fake names we don't know where they hail from, but there is a charge called making false declaration to the police, and we have jailed a few women so far who think they can outsmart the law."

increased

In an effort to deter the women, the police have increased their operations and presence in the areas targeted by the hookers.

One of the most recent operations occurred recently on Ripon Road and adjoining areas. During that operation, conducted between midnight and 3 p.m., several places, including a popular nightclub were raided.

In the aftermath, five women were charged, six vehicles were seized and a handgun, an assortment of machetes, knives, scissors, ice-picks,and even an axe, were found. In addition, vendors along the targeted areas were warned for illegal vending.

Police said they will continue their crackdown in these areas to prevent the sex migration.

Two St James men arrested during an Anti-Lottery Scam Task Force raid last year had their case set for mention on May 28 when they appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Man accused of stabbing, robbing boss gets bail extension

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A Westmoreland man accused of stabbing his boss and robbing him of $650,000 last October had his bail extended until April 23, when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Ricardo Thompson, from Bethel Town, is charged with unlawful wounding and robbery with aggravation.

stabbed in the neck

Allegations are that on October 3, 2013, approximately 6:30 p.m., Thompson, who worked as a sideman on the complainant's delivery truck, was being driven to Railway Lane in Montego Bay. On reaching an intersection, a knife was used to stab the boss in the neck.

During an ensuing struggle, the complainant got hold of the knife and slashed Thompson on his hands. Thompson fled the truck, and it was subsequently discovered that a bag containing $650,000, which was in the truck, was missing. Thompson later turned himself in to the police and was charged.

Clerk of the court, Natalie Malcolm, asked presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie to examine the complainant's medical certificate, which was on hand, and determine if the matter could be dealt with in the criminal court.

It was subsequently revealed that the complainant was to do follow-up treatment, so an additional medical certificate would be needed for the case file.

Irate customer causes chaos in tax office

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Chaos reigned at the Spanish Town tax office in St Catherine on Monday when an irate customer started throwing chairs forcing people to run for cover. One person was injured during the melee.

The incident unfolded about 10.30 a.m. in the jam-packed office.

The female customer was later chased and restrained by security personnel on the compound.

Reports said the woman complained of being deprived of one month's grace period for her motor vehicle. It is understood that she hurled expletives at employees and was asked to desist. She became angry and started throwing chairs.

A visible shaken worker told THE STAR: "I was at the counter dealing with taxpayers when I heard the female started to use expletives. She then threatened to use the chair and hit somebody and she started throwing them about hitting a woman on her back and leg. She ran after another woman who was 'videoing' the incident."

US to execute Jamaican today

André Williams, STAR Writer

A Jamaican man convicted in Florida for killing a state trooper 22 years ago with a pipe bomb is to be executed today.

Convicted drug dealer, Paul Augustus Howell's execution is set for 6 p.m. Attorneys representing Howell had failed to block the execution.

Tallahassee.com reported that the judge denied a request by Howell's attorneys who claimed the lethal-injection cocktail would subject him to an agonising death.

The governor signed a death warrant for Howell last January, but the Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked the execution.

However, last week, Florida Attorney General, Pam Bondi, certified that the stay had been lifted.

Howell was a member of a South Florida drug ring when he rigged a bomb inside a microwave oven as part of a plot to kill a Jackson County woman who could tie him to the murder of another drug dealer.

He dispatched another man to deliver the bomb by car, which Trooper Fulford stopped for speeding along Interstate 10 in Jefferson County. The bomb exploded while Fulford was searching the car, killing him instantly.

Kartel trial will stretch into next week

Kartel

The murder trial of entertainer Vybz Kartel and his four co-accused will not end this week as Justice Lennox Campbell had estimated last week.

Yesterday, the jurors informed the court that they would only be able to sit during the morning session today and tomorrow.

Defence lawyer Tamika Harris has not yet addressed the jury and the judge's summation to the jury is expected to take at least three days.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is on trial along with entertainer Shawn Campbell, also called 'Shawn Storm'; Kahiro Jones; Shane Williams; and André St John.

They are charged with the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams, of Waterford, St Catherine.

The Crown is alleging that Williams was beaten to death at Kartel's house in Havendale, St Andrew, on August 26, 2011, over two missing guns.

More than 10 persons turned up Monday morning at premises in St Andrew, demanding the return of money paid to a man, who claimed he could secure employment for them.

A number of other persons also 'turned up for work'.

The man, before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on another employment-related scam, is accused of fleecing people of thousands of dollars, claiming money they paid would have provided them a company phone, uniforms, training and identification cards.

"He tells people to pay $5,000 for employee uniforms. He said I was to take an ID picture. I did a test, Friday gone. Work was supposed to begin March 3," a woman revealed. She paid $2,000.

Another 'employee', who worked in a senior position, noticed a number of oddities at the workplace.

"Everything accounting he does. There is a book that persons sign when they come in to work. in the morning when he comes, he rips out a page. Things entered on the computer, the next day we come they are erased," said the former employee.

The offices were closed and a number of persons with receipts, bearing the amounts they had paid, as well as brochures with cell numbers that went to voicemail when called, were presented.

Police instructed persons to lodge reports at the Cross Roads police.

Head of the Fraud Squad, Senior Superintendent Anthony McLaughlin, said the matter is now with the Organised Crime Investigative Division, which probed the original matter which led to the man's arrest.

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

The police and personnel from a St Catherine-based school are attempting to locate the father who has been accused of impregnating a teenage student.

Reports are that about noon yesterday, the allegations came to light after the teenager began to behave strangely and attempted to harm herself physically.

not behaving normally

It is said that the child had gone on work experience, however, persons at her workplace realised that she was not behaving normally.

The school was then contacted and further checks revealed that the 16-year-old teen was several months pregnant.

Police personnel were summoned and the troubled teen taken by authorities for questioning. It is reported that the young girl alleged that she is carrying her father's child.

She further claimed that her father has been molesting her since she was in third form.

Thieves break into Spanish Town Hospital

The South East Regional Health Authority has asked for a review of the security arrangement at the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine, following a break-in at the institution on the weekend.

This was after a storeroom and a section of the hospital were broken into and televisions sets, DVD player, and medical supplies were stolen.

Following the theft of the items, persons doing dialysis treatment yesterday had to wait additional hours as several of the medicinal items were stolen by the hoodlums.

Personnel worked assiduously and things were brought back to normality during the course of the day.

Despite having security arrangement in place over the years, the health institution has suffered several criminal acts, such as robberies, theft, and break-ins.

The Spanish Town police are investigating the matter.

Woman fatally stabbed in dispute

An argument which escalated into a fatal stabbing has resulted in a 20-year-old woman being dragged before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer a murder charge.

The woman, Vennesa Cameron, of a Seaview Gardens address, appeared in court yesterday.

It is alleged that on October 9 around 8:15 a.m., Cameron attacked the woman who was walking with her friends. According to reports, the pair were previously engaged in a heated argument.

During the confrontation, a knife was used to stab the woman in the groin area. The injured woman was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where she died.

During court yesterday, the accused woman's attorney however, argued that she acted in self- defence. He stated that she was ganged and attacked by the woman and her friends.

"She was walking her daughter to school in the morning and the deceased and her five friends attacked her and she attempted to defend herself," he said.

The attorney also stated that Cameron was forced to leave the community after the incident because she was being threatened by the woman's father who is influential in the community.

Cameron was remanded into custody and is to return to court for mention today.

Prosecution clutching at straws - defence lawyers

Defence lawyers in the case involving Vybz Kartel in addressing the court yesterday described the prosecution's case as one that has many gaping holes.

Michael Lorne and Pierre Rogers, defence lawyers, made the comments when they addressed the 11-member jury in the Home Circuit Court.

Lorne referred to a crucial 15 minutes in the case when, according to the evidence, between 6:53 p.m. and 7:08 p.m. on August 16, 2011, the cell phone of the alleged dead man Clive 'Lizard' Williams was being used at the Caymanas cell site in St Catherine. He said at 7:08 p.m. there was a photograph of Kartel with a dog bite.

manipulation

There was manipulation and bungling in the case, Lorne said as he referred to the text messages. Lorne and attorneys-at-law Susan Dodd and Oliver Gardener are representing entertainer Shawn Campbell, also called 'Shawn Storm'.

"There is so much bungling that the impression, was given that 'Lizzy' was a name for Clive Williams and there was a contract to kill him. He said the jury should remember that during cross-examination, all the text message revealed was that 'Lizzy' was the daughter of the accused, Campbell, and he was 'just being a responsible father' asking the child's mother "how much fi deal wid everything for Lizzy".

He said the prosecution was clutching at straws to show that there was a plan to commit murder.

Rogers described the prosecution's case as a cabbage that was pretty on the outside but rotten on the inside.

He referred to the BlackBerry message attributed to Kartel's phone that 'Lizard' was chopped up 'fine, fine' as being created three hours after the police took that phone into their custody.

He said lead prosecutor Jeremy Taylor had failed to address the manipulation and tampering in the case. He said the main Crown witness said he hid a gun on the night of August 16, 2011, when he went back home from Havendale.

Rogers questioned why the police failed to investigate that and asked the jury to consider if that was the 30 pieces of silver paid for the witness' lies.

Roger's described the actions of some of the policemen in the case as 'unscrupulous and criminal'.

He will continue his address when the trial resumes today.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Campbell, Jones, Shane Williams and André St John are charged jointly with the murder of Clive Williams, of Waterford, St Catherine. He was allegedly beaten to death at Kartel's house in Havendale, St Andrew, on August 16, 2011 over two missing guns.

Blind child healed after prayers

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

Persons at a primary school in St Catherine are claiming that after prayers recently, a miracle occurred involving a student who claimed she had gone blind.

THE STAR was informed that a grade-three student went to class at the Grateful Hill Primary School and after a short while complained of becoming blind.

''I set about calling several pastors around the community, one came in, while others were on the phone and we prayed for the child. I laid my hand on her eye and she said that she felt movement in the eye. She then washed it in the bathroom,'' Principal George Moodie said.

The principal told THE STAR that he believes that it was a miracle and it helps to strengthen his Christian faith that through God all things are possible.

His views were echoed by persons who said that we are living in the last days before the return of Jesus Christ.

''The Bible tells us that in the last days there will be signs and wonders, so these are some of the things that will happen wherever you are. It is good that the principal used prayer as his first step,'' Jacqueline Williams, a St Catherine resident, said.

Meanwhile, other persons said that the school should be singled out for its clear belief that prayer can be of very good use.

Mentally ill woman accused of stabbing church members faces court

A mentally ill woman broke down in tears when she was remanded into custody, after appearing in court to answer to allegations that she stabbed two members of a church she attends.

Thirty-four-year-old Simone Allen of a Kingston address was charged with wounding with intent when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

disturbance

It is alleged that on February 7, the accused was causing a disturbance at the church, which caused members to close the doors. It was revealed that this behaviour occurs on a regular basis.

On the day of the incident, the accused attempted to force her way into the church when the two complainants attempted to bar her from entering the building.

It is alleged that Allen used a knife to stab one of the men in the chest and the other in the leg.

Her attorney asked the court that she be moved from a penal institution to a mental institution due to her mental illness.

A psychiatric evaluation was ordered by Resident Magistrate Lorna Williams, and she is to return to court on March 4.

A former national footballer and his younger brother, were beaten following an incident at a wake on Friday night.

Information reaching THE STAR is that the men were beaten by mourners during a nine night in a Kingston community.

THE STAR gathered that a large crowd, included men who were previously unwelcome in the community, turned out to pay respect to deceased. Residents said permission was granted for all to attend the wake and pay their respect.

One of those who turned out however, was a man with whom the footballer's brother had had an altercation in the past.

"Him see a man who did cut him from long time and him move to the man and attack him," one resident said. "The people dem never want dem vibes deh, but the baller go get involved a defend him brother and di people dem start say this and that."

"Di people dem lick the two of dem, mi all hear say di baller face swell up after the beating." The residents said though things were quickly brought under control, the air is still tense.

Efforts to speak with the footballer, who currently plays for one of Jamaica's top football clubs, proved futile yesterday.

Head of the Kingston Central Police Division, Superintendent Victor Hamilton, was unaware of an incident.

He said: "The only incident I know happened at the nine night was that shots were fired. A report was made to police control ... I will investigate the matter about the footballer because if it is so, it has implications to go further, so we'll definitely look into that".

Tommy Lee Sparta - File

Controversial Jamaican dancehall artiste, Tommy Lee Sparta, was denied entry into Dominica last night after arriving in a private jet at the Melville Hall Airport, THE STAR understands.

According to http://ift.tt/1hiyYMK, Tommy Lee came out of the jet and went inside the airport's terminal but the authorities denied further entry.

He was slated to perform in Dominica last night.

The main organiser of the concert, Cabral Douglas, confirmed reports that the artiste was at the airport and had been denied entry.

An attorney, Tehani Behanzin, who tried to assist in the matter, has been denied access to him, according to Douglas.

It is unknown why Tommy Lee was denied entry. There was also a contingent of police at the airport.

THE STAR gathered that members of the religious fraternity, who allege his music promotes violence, have harshly criticised Tommy Lee's performance in Dominica.

Yesterday when THE STAR spoke with Tommy Lee's manager, Heavy D, in Dominica, he confirmed that the artiste had been denied entry.

Heavy D said: "We are presently here at the airport trying to gather from the authorities why we have been denied entry ... the pilot of the jet is here trying to negotiate with them because he says he is not going anywhere. It's just pure confusion so we are trying to get some answers. This is a CARICOM country so we don't understand."

He is Christopher Livermore, charged with making a false declaration.

When the matter was called up Friday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, Livermore pleaded guilty to the offence.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey reminded Livermore that his actions were very serious.

A fingerprint order was also made against Livermore.

A social enquiry report was requested to determine the sentence to be handed down.

52-y-o woman held for ganja at airport

A 52 year-old woman held with 33 pounds of compressed ganja at the Norman Manley International Airport, was recently remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Charged with possession of, conspiracy to export, dealing in and taking steps preparatory to export ganja is Adrienne Foster from Catherine Hall, St James and Miami, Florida.

The court heard that on January 8 about 3:45 p.m. police conducting security checks at the airport noticed Foster preparing to board a flight to London, England.

She was asked if she packed her suitcase herself to which she responded in the affirmative. A search was requested and an assortment of cans bearing the label ackee and callaloo were discovered.

The tins were subsequently cut opened and cylindrical parcels wrapped with carbon paper allegedly containing ganja were found.

When cautioned, Foster told police that a friend of a friend knew of her desire to travel and offered to pay for her trip. She said she met the man who gave her a suitcase to give to relatives in the United Kingdom.

Foster broke down in tears telling officers "I can't believe someone would do this to me. I only wanted to travel the world because I have a deadly disease and I am on a death sentence,".

Foster's attorney beseeched Resident Magistrate Grace Henry-McKenzie to grant her bail as a result of medical reasons, however he told the RM that he would need to get confirmation of her medical status from her doctors abroad. Foster returns to court on March 10.

Documentary highlights their life in New Kingston

Diandra Grandison, Staff Reporter

Dressed in wigs, female apparel and heavy make-up, a group of homosexual sex workers were the highlight of a documentary which went viral on the Internet recently.

The film titled, Documentary on Gay Prostitutes Living in Jamaica was first aired on video sharing site YouTube more than a week ago and has stirred responses of pity and disgust for the gay prostitutes.

The almost hour long documentary, which was produced by CBTV, was filmed on a sidewalk at Trafalgar Road, St Andrew, a popular hotspot for homosexuals.

Ten gay prostitutes were interviewed, all of whom spoke of their experiences as a sex workers as well as used the opportunity to express their grouses.

During the documentary, a 22-year-old 'man' with the moniker 'Stagerine', spoke of earning a living as a sex worker since he was 14. "I come from rural St Catherine, saw a gay sex tape and heard about New Kingston and decided to come hustle, I've been a sex worker for seven years," he shared.

But unlike many of his colleagues, Stagerine revealed, he still has a good relationship with his family, despite his occupation and lifestyle.

The homosexual sex workers, also spoke of being attacked by passers-by and being made homeless due to their sexual orientation. This proved to be true as during the interview a bottle was thrown at the group.

Sasha-Berry, 21, explained how he was hospitalised late last year: "I was stabbed multiple times in December, after I was set up by 'two real girls' to mek dem friend try kill me."

Another worker said he is forced to sleep in a gully. " From yuh gay, dem don't waa rent we dem place and what we make is hand to mouth, we can't afford it," Trina-Doll explained.

The group also emphasised their need for help and aspirations to live overseas in a 'gay-friendly' country.

"Mi feel like me waa leave Jamaica and live my life free, waa live like inna Amsterdam weh it legal!" one said.

Throughout the film, the men expressed their disappointment in Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, who they claimed used them to get elected. They claimed that the prime minister made promises during the December 2011 leadership debate that if admitted in office she would review the Buggery Act.

Another added, "she needs to look out for us. She visits other countries and sees how their heads of state look out for homosexuals ... How do you sleep Miss Portia, knowing that your brothers and sisters are sleeping in the gully?"

While some of the more than 50,000 YouTube viewers sympathised with the gay sex workers, others responded with disdain.

"Oh my God, my heart bleeds for these poor uneducated guys, this is a very sad state," a viewer commented.

Another commented, "this is disgusting! I'm for live and let live, but sex on the street and them kinda levity, spread all kinda disease and dysfunction."

"Mi feel like me waa leave Jamaica and live my life free, waa live like inna Amsterdam weh it legal!"

Lewis, 20, who had mentioned that a spirit entered his body and caused him to kill the elderly woman last year was given a psychiatric evaluation, which came back to the court indicating that he is deemed fit to enter a plea.

He is to return to court on March 17, when his mother is expected to attend.

It is reported that the elderly newspaper vendor was hacked to death by a man believed to be of unsound mind after he allegedly asked her for money and she refused.

Dead is Sylvia Sewell, 83, from Hanna Town, Kingston. She was attacked on May 30, at the intersection of Beckford and Orange streets.

Her attacker was reportedly set upon by an angry mob, but was rescued by private security personnel.

Sewell had sold The Gleaner and THE STAR for more than 30 years.

Drug dealer to be executed

A Jamaican drug dealer who is convicted of murdering a highway patrol trooper in Florida over 20-years-ago is scheduled to be executed on Wednesday at the Florida State Prison for the offence.

Forty-seven-year-old Paul Augus-tus Howell, from Spauldings, Clarendon, has been on death row for the past 18 years. He was convicted of killing the lawman with a home-made pipe bomb on February 1, 1992.

According to the Associated Press, the bomb was placed inside a gift-wrapped microwave oven which authorities claim was intended to kill two women in the Panhandle town of Marianna, because they knew too much about a drug-related murder in Broward County.

The officer stopped the speeding car which Howell was in as it was transporting the package and was killed instantly when he opened it.
