A man who told the court that he was not aware that two pounds of ganja was in a tin of cheese he was taking overseas, will know his fate on March 25.
Leo McLean, from Claremont, St Ann, pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of ganja, and not guilty to the charges of dealing in ganja, taking steps to export ganja and conspiracy to export ganja when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
According to reports, McLean was at the Norman Manley International Airport ready to board a flight to Curaçao when his luggage was searched and approximately two pounds of ganja was found in the cheese tin.
McLean told the court, however, that it was a friend of the person he was to visit in Curaçao who gave him the tin. "I thought it was cheese. I was going to my lady friend and her friend asked me to carry a cheese for her. I never know it was ganja. Honest to God," he said.
The investigating officer refuted McLean's claims stating that, "He told me that he bought the cheese and couldn't find the receipt."
To which Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece stated, "is who going to believe what you're saying?" The accused man continued to attempt to explain how the ganja ended up in his possession. However, he was eventually remanded into custody, and is to return to court for mention on March 25.
