Driver charged with death of mother and child

The driver of the ill-fated car which resulted in the death of a mother and child has been charged with two counts of manslaughter.


George Richardson, 62-year-old of Portmore address, has been charged with manslaughter in relation to the deaths of Jaharian Durrant, 30 and five-year-old Jascinth Haynes both of Hellshire Heights, St Catherine.

The accident occurred about 6 a.m. yesterday along the Hellshire main road in St Catherine.


It is alleged that Richardson was driving his 1999 Toyota Camry motor car along the road when he overtook a line of traffic and crashed into a utility pole.


Durrant and Haynes were seated in the back seat. They suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at hospital.


Richardson was treated at hospital.


Richardson is to appear in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on September 16, when the matter will be mentioned.


A total of 217 persons have been killed on the nation's roads since the start of the year.
