Juror causes murder trial to postpone

The murder trial of Clifton Harrison, who is charged with the death of a senior citizen, failed to get under way yesterday after a juror declared that he was familiar with the accused.

The trial was prevented from starting after a male juror revealed that he knew the accused. After the Crown Counsel and the defence led by Peter Champagnie were informed of the situation, it was decided the trial could not proceed.

The siblings of the deceased, Louise Barnes, who travelled from the United Kingdom for the trial were informed of the problem.

They expressed frustration about the delays, but resigned themselves to the reality of a next year trial date.

Harrison is charged with the death of 68-year-old Louise Barnes of Old Harbour, St Catherine. Allegations are that on October 2, 2009, the burnt remains of Barnes was taken from a shallow grave near Thetford Farm near Old Harbour, St Catherine.

An investigation was launched by the St Catherine South police which resulted in Harrison being charged with murder.

The accused has maintained his innocence throughout his appearances.
