Prisoners cut their way out of jail
Up to news time last night, there was still an intense manhunt for three of four detainees who had escaped from the Spanish Town police lock-up in St Catherine.
An accused murderer is among those still at large. The men reportedly escaped from the lock-up between Wednesday night and early yesterday morning.
THE WEEKEND STAR gathered that one of the men, 25-year-old Kevin Johnson, was nabbed in the Corporate Area shortly after the jailbreak.
Reports from the police are that between 11 p.m. and midnight, the detainees cut their way out of the cell using a hacksaw blade.
The police suspect that this particular escape was well planned and timely executed, based on the amount of effort it took to cut the cell bars.
over-crowding
Our news team understands that police at the station have long complained of poor working conditions at the lock-up, including over-crowding.
Those on the run include 21-year-old Andre Knight of March Pen Road, who is charged with murder; 25-year-old Zenas Gemison of Fraser's Content, who is charged with robbery with aggravation and illegal possession of firearm, and Rushane Fedrick of Fraser's Content, who is charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
The police are cautioning the public that the three were incarcerated for serious offences and are considered dangerous.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the escapees are being asked to contact the Spanish Town police at 984-2874 or 984-9757, Crime Stop at 311, police 119 emergency number, or the nearest police station.
