Commissioner of Police Dr Carl Mckay Williams has expressed condolence to the family and friends of the slain police constable, James Grant in African Gardens, St Andrew yesterday afternoon.
"The murder of Constable Grant is a despicable act of cowardice that has plunged the Constabulary in mourning yet again. It underscores the propensity of criminals to target members of the Constabulary Force as they seek to maintain peace and ensure public safety in communities,"Dr Williams said.
Grant, of the St Andrew Central Division, was shot dead yesterday afternoon in the African Gardens community in August Town.
Police investigators told The STAR that the constable was part of a three-member team that had gone into African Gardens based on intelligence that heavily-armed men aligned to one gang was getting ready to launch an attack on members of a rival gang.
One investigator revealed that instead of running, the gunmen turned their weapons on the police and sprayed their service vehicle with gunfire, killing the constable and injuring another police.
It's believed that members of the police team managed to return fire and the gunmen reportedly ran leaving a high-powered rifle.
Constable Grant enlisted in the Jamaica Constabulary Force on September 17, 2001 and had served 13 years in the St. Andrew Central Division.
