A Linstead, St Catherine, taxi driver accused of impregnating a 14-year-old girl and attempting to abort it by giving her capsules, was granted bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

When the matter was mentioned, a successful bail application was made for the 38-year-old accused man by his attorney, Grace-ann Cameron, who told the court her client was arrested by the police more than two weeks ago and is in a position to prove his innocence.

Resident Magistrate Vaughn Smith offered bail in the sum of $500,000, with one or two sureties. This on condition that the accused surrender his travel documents, keep away from the complainant and her mother, report daily to the Linstead police and be home by 7 p.m. daily.

Allegations are that the accused had sexual relations with the 14-year-old, who became pregnant. He reportedly gave her a quantity of tablets to abort the child. After ingesting the tablets, the teen became ill and her relatives got word of the relationship.

A report was made to the police, and the man was charged with having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 and procuring abortion. He returns to court on April 8, when the matter will be mentioned.
