A trio slapped with fraud-related charges was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday after it was alleged that one of the accused, an inmate, contacted the complainant and told him he was accepted into the JDF.
Charged with Fraud is an inmate, David Smith, who also goes by the name Aaron Smith; while Annabella Monteque and Gilmore Sutherland have both been charged with Fraud and Obtaining Money by False pretence.
All three accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Allegations are that Smith contacted the complainant while in a lock-up and told him that he had been accepted into the Jamaica defence Force (JDF).
Further, Smith allegedly told the complainant that he was to meet with JDF personnel and pay $15,000 towards obtaining a medical and uniforms.
The court was told that Monteque and Sutherland met with the complainant and collected the money, which was reportedly handed to Monteque.
An investigation was launched and two cell phones were found in Smith's jail cell and the co-accused were held during a sting operation.
The crown alleges that the cell phones found in Smith's cell were the devices used to contact the complainant.
When the matter was called up, Smith, in his defence, said he knew nothing about the allegations but could help investigators to establish where it originated.
He said, "Your Honour, mi sickly, a bare beat dem a beat mi up from mi get draft up ina this, mi can help the police enuh, but unuh afi move mi because dem a stab mi up and label mi as informer."
Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said, "Why do they call you Aaron Smith?...You need to stop with your ginalship. Officers, take him away..."
Smith was further remanded, while Sutherland and Montique had their bails extended.
All three are to return to court on October 30th.
