Sagicor Group Jamaica Limited announced the purchase and donation of a fever scan machine to the Ministry of National Security to aid in the detection of Ebola.

The announcement was made at a joint press conference with the minister of national security at Sagicor's head office. In attendance were Minister Peter Bunting; Dr Fenton Ferguson; Jennifer McDonald - CEO of Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency; Major General Stewart Sanders - permanent secretary in the Ministry of National Security; and Willard Brown, executive vice-president - Sagicor Life Jamaica.

The body-scanning machine is valued at US$38,000. It uses infra-red technology to detect individuals with elevated body temperatures.

Richard Byles, president and chief executive officer of the Sagicor Group Jamaica, said: "We are concerned for the safety of all Jamaicans. The potential threat of this health hazard is something that requires a collective effort, and our purchase and donation of this equipment is part of our contribution to the welfare of the entire Jamaican society."

Crucial role

Minister of National Security Peter Bunting said: "The move by Sagicor to purchase this fever scan machine is a clear indication of a private sector entity recognising its crucial role in support of public safety and security. Sagicor's decision to volunteer assistance is yet another example of how citizens and organisations can Unite for Change. This timely contribution should serve as an inspiration to others to join the Government as we work to protect our borders from new and emerging threats."
