No evidence was offered against a British mother and daughter accused of using a bogus credit card to fund a two-night stay at a hotel located in Kingston, when they appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Charged with obtaining credit by fraud are a 38-year-old British national and her 17-year-old daughter. Both pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Allegations are that on October 8, the two checked into the hotel and spent two nights at the establishment, benefiting from meals amounting to US$1,600 (approximately J$180,000) using the counterfeit credit card. It is reported that at that time, the hotel manager discovered that the credit card was forged and alerted police personnel.
Subsequently, detectives attached to the Fraud Squad arrested and charged both the woman and her teenage daughter for the offence on October 11.
After the judgement was handed down by the sitting magistrate, the two appeared visibly overjoyed and steeped in emotion as the mother hugged her daughter while in the the dock.
