A man, who kicked a child in his belly because he used offensive language to him, was slapped with a $20,000 fine or six months imprisonment yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
Charged with assault is Basil Jackson who entered a guilty plea and offered the court an explanation.
The five-year-old complainant who was in court with his mother said, "Him kick mi ina mi belly and it hurt. I was playing and he kicked me."
Jackson told the court, "I didn't really kick him hard because I was sitting down."
After the child was moved to tears, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey took the child into her chamber and spoke with him.
She said to the accused after returning, "He told me you kick him hot and I must send you to prison."
Jackson was fined $20,000 or a six-month prison term.
After handing down her sentence, Pusey told Jackson, "You are lucky. I was going to send you away."
Jackson was also told to apologise to the child.
