TAJ employee detained following RPD search

An employee of the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has been detained following a search and seizure operation, spearheaded by the Revenue Protection Division (RPD) and the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption (MOCA) Task Force on Friday.

Head of the RPD, Major (retired) Johanna Lewin, said the search and seizure was done with the intention of identifying and listing documents and other paraphernalia that would be necessary in an investigation the agency is currently carrying out.

She said charges should be laid against the employee.

The operation, which was conducted across the Corporate Area and St Catherine, was being conducted in several locations to apprehend persons involved in tax evasion, revenue fraud and cybercrimes.

The division stated, in a release to the media on Friday, that several staff members at the TAJ and members of the public have been engaging in illegal activities that cause the Tax Administration Department to lose revenue.

The Finance Ministry is therefore urging individuals who have information that can help to contact the RPD or MOCA.
