Two boys linked to the alleged attack on a St Thomas Technical High School teacher on Friday have been sent home indefinitely.
They are to remain out of school while a meeting is arranged involving them, the teacher and the school's administration.
The decision to send them home follows a sit-in by teachers yesterday, which forced the cancellation of classes. Officials from the Education Ministry are to visit the school today, and have requested that the teachers resume normal duties while the matter is investigated.
The industrial arts teacher told The Star that he was left with a swollen face, scratches and bruises.
His doctor has ordered further medical examination, including head and chest X-rays. He is also to take time off from school.
Reports said the teacher was assigned to the sixth-form block to keep order during Friday's devotions.
The teacher said while the devotion was in progress, three male students began walking out, with two of them indicating they needed to use the bathroom. The teacher said he told the boys they could not leave as they would disturb the devotion.
He said he held on to the bag of the students who insisted on leaving. He says one of the students hurled expletives and slapped him in the face, with the other boys joining in and hitting him all over his body.
Yesterday, one of the accused boys denied the teacher's account and said he hit the teacher in self-defence. The other accused boys claim only one student was involved and the others were trying to separate the teacher and their classmate.
Two parents who were called to the school yesterday complained that a scheduled meeting had to be postponed because of the teacher's unavailability.
They also raised concerns that until a meeting is scheduled, their boys will be out of school.
