18-Y-O BEATS NURSE WITH BED

An 18-year-old woman who is accused of using a bed to beat a nurse at a hospital was further remanded into custody when she appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Peta-Gaye Deans of a Kingston address.

According to reports, on November 30, around 7:20 p.m., on Ward 5E at the Bustamante Hospital for Children, the complainant who is employed to the hospital as a patient care assistant, was hit in her forehead with a bed by the accused after claiming that the complainant had hit her with the bed while she was seated.

The complainant argued, however, that she did not hit the accused with the bed, which resulted in a fight, during which the accused kicked the complainant in her side, then went outside to grab a stone, but was allegedly stopped by onlookers.

The police were summoned and both parties were taken to the National Stadium Police Station and a report was made.

After the allegations were read, the accused quickly denied going for a stone to hit the complainant, "I never go outside to pick up no stone, I took up my baby and leave, and is when I was leaving that the police hold on to me. I was trying to avoid the situation," she told the court.

According to the accused, the complainant used the crib to hit her child and she was not pleased with the complainant's response after she pointed out the fact.

"She use the crib and hit mi baby. Me tell har and she turn roun' an' seh she nuh response and me seh that is no way fi a talk to a patient and I push back the crib pan har and she start fight me and the other nurse dem affi a hold har back."

After the accused gave her explanation, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey told the accused, "even if she had hit you and the baby, you shouldn't have hit her, you should have made a report."

Deans was remanded and is to return to court for sentencing on December 5.
